PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — have become the defining water quality issue of the 2020s in the United States, and South Florida is not exempt. In April 2024, the EPA finalized the first-ever National Primary Drinking Water Regulation for PFAS, setting enforceable maximum contaminant levels at 4 parts per trillion (ppt) for PFOA and PFOS individually and 10 ppt for several other PFAS compounds. These are among the most stringent drinking water standards the EPA has ever established.

What PFAS Are and Why They Matter
PFAS are a class of thousands of synthetic chemicals characterized by extremely strong carbon-fluorine bonds — one of the strongest bonds in chemistry. Fire training facilities: AFFF (aqueous film-forming foam) used in fire training has been a primary PFAS source nationwide. Multiple fire training sites in Palm Beach County have documented PFAS releases to groundwater.
Industrial and commercial sites: Manufacturing facilities, textile operations, and certain commercial businesses using PFAS-containing products have contributed to groundwater contamination in parts of Palm Beach County.

Does Boca Raton's Water Treatment Remove PFAS?
Traditional water treatment methods — flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, chloramine disinfection — do not remove PFAS. These chemicals require specific treatment technologies: granular activated carbon (GAC), high-pressure membrane filtration (nanofiltration or reverse osmosis), or ion exchange resins specifically designed for PFAS. Utilities implementing PFAS treatment typically use GAC filtration or reverse osmosis at the plant level. The City of Boca Raton and Palm Beach County utilities are evaluating and implementing treatment as they work toward compliance with 2027 deadlines.
Home Treatment Options for PFAS

NSF/ANSI Standard 58 certification for PFAS removal provides independent verification of performance.
Activated carbon block filters: Certified carbon block filters (NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 for PFAS) reduce PFAS at point of use. Performance degrades as the media becomes exhausted — filter replacement on schedule is critical, as breakthrough of PFAS can occur before other performance indicators suggest the filter needs replacement.
Standard pitcher filters, refrigerator filters, and sediment filters do not significantly reduce PFAS.
