Is Bonita Springs Tap Water Safe to Drink? — Lee County Water Quality Explained

Is Bonita Springs tap water safe to drink? It's a question new residents ask, and a question long-term residents revisit whenever they see a water quality report or read a news story about Florida's water challenges. The direct answer is: Bonita Springs tap water meets federal safe drinking water standards. But "meets federal standards" tells only part of the story — and understanding the full picture helps you make informed decisions about your family's water.

What "Safe" Actually Means Under Federal Law

The EPA's Safe Drinking Water Act establishes Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for over 90 regulated substances in public water supplies. When Lee County Utilities or the City of Bonita Springs certifies that its water is "safe," it means detected contaminants fall below these MCL thresholds. What this doesn't mean: that the water is free of all contaminants, that detected levels carry zero health risk, or that unregulated emerging contaminants are absent.

Federal MCLs are set by balancing public health protection against treatment feasibility and economic cost — they represent the maximum allowed concentration, not a "safe" level in the absolute sense. For sensitive populations (pregnant women, infants, immunocompromised individuals, people with certain health conditions), levels well below the MCL may still be worth addressing.

What Lee County's Water Quality Reports Show

Lee County Utilities publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) — required by federal law — that discloses all detected contaminants and their levels relative to MCLs. Key findings typically include:

Hardness (calcium and magnesium): Not regulated as a health contaminant by the EPA, but significant for water quality experience. Bonita Springs water typically runs 16-24 GPG — extreme hardness that affects appliances, fixtures, soap performance, and is the primary reason for water treatment in this community. High hardness itself isn't a direct health concern, though water treated to remove hardness (through softening) can have implications for sodium intake that some households monitor.

Disinfection byproducts (THMs and HAAs): Lee County Utilities uses chloramines as a secondary disinfectant. Chloramines react with naturally occurring organic matter — particularly the dissolved organic material from the Caloosahatchee River source water used in some Lee County treatment facilities — to form trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). These are regulated under the Stage 2 Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproducts Rule. CCR reports show whether these levels comply with MCLs — in years when source water quality is affected by algae blooms or agricultural runoff from Lake Okeechobee, HAA and THM levels can approach their MCL limits. Long-term exposure to THMs and HAAs at elevated concentrations has been associated with increased risk of certain cancers.

PFAS: Under the EPA's 2024 PFAS National Primary Drinking Water Rule — the first ever MCL for PFAS compounds — Lee County Utilities is now required to test and report PFAS concentrations. PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are "forever chemicals" that accumulate in the body over time. Southwest Florida's water supply is influenced by agricultural and military land use that can introduce PFAS to source water. Review your current CCR for PFAS detection data.

Nitrates: Agricultural runoff from Lee County's historical and current farming areas contributes nitrates to some source water components. Nitrates are regulated at 10 mg/L MCL — primarily due to the risk of methemoglobinemia (blue baby syndrome) in infants. Lee County Utilities typically maintains nitrate levels well below the MCL, but if you have well water in rural Bonita Springs, independent nitrate testing is advisable.

Radionuclides: Naturally occurring radionuclides — including radium-226, radium-228, and uranium — leach from Lee County's limestone geology into groundwater. The EPA regulates combined radium at 5 pCi/L and uranium at 30 µg/L. Lee County Utilities manages these through its treatment processes, but wells in the Hawthorn formation in eastern Lee County can show elevated radionuclide concentrations worth monitoring.

Unregulated Contaminants of Concern

The CCR only covers regulated contaminants. Several substances of growing concern aren't yet covered by federal MCLs:

Pharmaceutical residues: Hormones, antibiotics, and other pharmaceutical compounds enter waterways through human excretion and improper disposal. Conventional water treatment doesn't fully remove these compounds. Concentrations are typically very low, but long-term cumulative exposure effects are not fully understood.

Microplastics: Microplastic particles have been detected in water supplies across the country. No federal MCL exists. Their health implications are under active research.

Short-chain PFAS replacement chemicals: Newer PFAS compounds like GenX and PFBS — developed as replacements for the now-phased-out PFOA and PFOS — may not yet be fully covered by current testing requirements or MCLs, though the 2024 rule begins to address some of these.

Special Populations: When Extra Protection Makes Sense

For most healthy adults, Bonita Springs tap water that meets all MCLs represents acceptable risk. But for certain populations, taking additional precautions is prudent:

Infants under 6 months: Use filtered or bottled water for mixing formula and drinking water. Infants' digestive systems can't effectively metabolize nitrates; their immune systems are also more sensitive to disinfection byproducts and PFAS.

Pregnant women: Reducing exposure to PFAS, chloramine disinfection byproducts, and nitrates during pregnancy is advisable given the potential effects on fetal development.
