Fort Lauderdale Chloramine Water: What It Is and Why It Matters for Your Home

Turn on any tap in Fort Lauderdale and you're drinking water treated with chloramines — a combination of chlorine and ammonia that Broward County Water and Wastewater Services uses as its primary disinfectant. It's effective at killing pathogens, it meets all federal Safe Drinking Water Act standards, and it's what keeps the water system safe. It's also something most Fort Lauderdale residents have never heard of, despite the fact that it affects everything from the taste of their drinking water to the lifespan of their plumbing.
Why Fort Lauderdale Uses Chloramines
The switch from chlorine to chloramines was driven by EPA regulations targeting disinfection byproducts (DBPs). When chlorine reacts with organic matter in source water — the New River, C-14 Canal, Everglades Agricultural Area runoff — it forms trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), both regulated carcinogens at high concentrations. Chloramines produce significantly fewer of these byproducts, which is why utilities across South Florida adopted them.
Fort Lauderdale's source water comes primarily from the Biscayne Aquifer, with surface water inputs during certain seasons. The Biscayne Aquifer is relatively shallow and unconfined, making it more susceptible to surface contamination than the deeper Floridan Aquifer further north.
What Chloramines Do to Your Water — and Your Home
Chloramines are more stable than free chlorine — they persist throughout the distribution system rather than dissipating quickly. That stability benefits water safety but creates different challenges for home use.

- Reverse osmosis with catalytic carbon pre-filter: The most thorough option for drinking water. The pre-filter handles chloramine removal, protecting the RO membrane, while the membrane removes dissolved solids and other contaminants.
- Whole-house catalytic carbon filter: For homeowners concerned about chloramine exposure through showering (skin and respiratory absorption are pathways), a whole-house system addresses the issue at the point of entry.

Fort Lauderdale's canal system and proximity to the Intracoastal Waterway means saltwater intrusion is an ongoing concern during dry season.
