Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — better known as PFAS or forever chemicals — have become one of the most discussed environmental health topics in Florida over the past decade. These synthetic compounds don't break down in the environment or in the human body, and they've been found in water systems across the state. What Are PFAS and Why Do They Matter in Inverness?

PFAS is an umbrella term for thousands of man-made chemicals used in nonstick cookware coatings, food packaging, firefighting foam (AFFF), stain-resistant fabrics, and countless industrial applications since the 1940s.
