PFAS Forever Chemicals in Naples Water: What Collier County Homeowners Need to Know

PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — have earned the nickname "forever chemicals" for a reason. They don't break down in the environment. They accumulate in living tissue. And they've been detected in drinking water sources across all 50 states, including Florida's Floridan Aquifer system that supplies communities throughout Southwest Florida.

For Naples homeowners drawing from Collier County's municipal system or private wells, PFAS contamination is not a hypothetical future risk. It's a present reality that warrants attention and, in many cases, in-home treatment.

PFAS Sources in Southwest Florida

PFAS compounds — used in firefighting foam, food packaging, stain-resistant textiles, and industrial processes — persist indefinitely in the environment. In Southwest Florida, several contamination pathways are relevant:

Military and airport sources: Aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) used in aircraft crash and fire training contains PFAS at very high concentrations. Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) near Fort Myers, Naples Municipal Airport, and regional training facilities have all been associated with AFFF use. PFAS from these sites can migrate through the shallow aquifer system.

Agricultural and industrial use: PFAS-containing pesticide formulations and industrial processes in Collier and Hendry Counties have contributed to diffuse contamination. The phosphate industry, active in the broader South Florida region, has also been associated with PFAS in some studies.

Biosolids land application: Wastewater treatment biosolids historically spread on agricultural land as fertilizer often contain concentrated PFAS that leaches into groundwater. Florida has been active in regulating this practice, but legacy contamination from past applications persists.

Regulatory Status: EPA's 2024 PFAS MCLs

The EPA established enforceable Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for six PFAS compounds in April 2024, including PFOA and PFOS at 4 parts per trillion (ppt) — some of the most stringent water quality standards ever set. Collier County Water-Sewer District must now monitor for these compounds and take action if levels exceed the MCLs.

Collier County has invested in advanced treatment upgrades, and the utility's data shows that treated municipal water generally meets the new PFAS standards. However, private well owners in Collier County are entirely responsible for their own PFAS monitoring and treatment. There is no regulatory framework requiring private wells to test for PFAS, and many homeowners in East Naples, Golden Gate Estates, and rural Collier County have never had their wells tested.

Which Treatment Technologies Actually Remove PFAS

Reverse osmosis (RO) — highest effectiveness: RO membranes reject PFAS at 90–99% depending on the specific compound and membrane quality. A properly maintained under-sink RO system is the most reliable point-of-use treatment for PFAS in drinking and cooking water.

Granular activated carbon (GAC): Effective for long-chain PFAS (PFOA, PFOS) when designed with adequate contact time. Less effective for shorter-chain PFAS like PFBS and GenX. Whole-house GAC systems can provide point-of-entry PFAS reduction.

PFAS-selective ion exchange resin: Newer anion exchange resins show excellent removal rates for both long- and short-chain PFAS. Increasingly available in whole-house configurations and represent an emerging best practice for comprehensive treatment.

Water softeners — no PFAS removal: A common misconception. Ion exchange softeners remove hardness minerals only. PFAS passes through a softener completely unaffected.

Recommended Approach for Naples Homeowners

At the point of entry: A sediment pre-filter, catalytic carbon filter, and ion exchange softener address hardness and disinfection chemistry. If whole-house PFAS reduction is desired, a PFAS-selective GAC or IX tank can be added.

At the kitchen sink: A reverse osmosis system with an NSF/ANSI 58-certified membrane provides the highest-confidence PFAS removal for drinking and cooking water — the primary ingestion pathway.

For private well owners with PFAS concerns: Start with certified laboratory testing to establish baseline levels, then design treatment based on actual results. PFAS levels in Naples-area private wells vary considerably based on location and aquifer depth.

PFAS contamination is real, measurable, and now regulated in Florida. The good news: effective treatment technologies exist. In a premium market like Naples, where water quality is increasingly part of what buyers and owners expect, PFAS treatment has become part of comprehensive water quality management.
