Chloramines in Ocala Water — What Marion County Homeowners Need to Know

Open the tap in most Ocala homes and you'll get water that smells faintly of chemicals — a trace of something between chlorine and ammonia that lingers even after the water cools. This is chloramine: the disinfectant added by Ocala Utilities to keep the municipal water supply free of harmful bacteria and viruses throughout the distribution network.
Why Ocala Utilities Uses Chloramines
For most of the 20th century, utilities relied on free chlorine. But free chlorine reacts with naturally occurring organic matter in water to form trihalomethanes (THMs), a class of disinfection byproducts the EPA now regulates for their carcinogenic potential. Switching to chloramines dramatically reduces THM formation and provides more stable disinfection in long pipe networks. The Trade-Off: Chloramine's Own Byproducts
Chloramines create their own disinfection byproducts — most notably haloacetic acids (HAAs) and potentially nitrosamines under certain conditions. Beyond regulated byproducts, chloramines present practical household problems.
Taste and odor persistence: Chloramines don't dissipate from water the way free chlorine does. You can leave chlorinated water on the counter and free chlorine largely off-gases in a few hours. Chloramines stay bound in solution — which is why the chemical taste persists even in refrigerated water.
Incompatibility with standard carbon filters: A basic activated carbon under-sink filter reduces free chlorine very effectively but does relatively little for chloramines. Chloramine molecules require either catalytic carbon — specifically engineered to break the chloramine bond — or very high contact time with standard carbon. This is the filter upgrade that makes the most noticeable difference in Ocala tap water taste.
Interaction with Ocala's other water quality issues: Chloramine disinfection interacts with the naturally occurring organics and minerals in Floridan Aquifer water to produce byproducts at higher rates than some other water sources. The high mineral content of Ocala water means the overall water chemistry is more reactive. This makes chloramine removal more important here than in softer-water, lower-mineral areas.

Catalytic carbon whole-house filter — removes chloramines and reduces haloacetic acids throughout the home, improving taste and reducing chemical exposure during showering and bathing.
Under-sink reverse osmosis — provides the deepest treatment for drinking and cooking water, catching any radionuclides that passed through the softener and reducing all remaining trace contaminants.
