PFAS Forever Chemicals in Ocala, FL: What Marion County Water Users Should Know

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) — synthetic chemicals sometimes called "forever chemicals" because they don't break down in the environment — have emerged as a widespread water quality concern across Florida. For Ocala and Marion County residents, understanding the PFAS landscape in your water supply requires looking at both the regional picture and the specific sources that may affect the Floridan Aquifer and the City of Ocala's water system.
Why PFAS Matter in North-Central Florida
PFAS were used extensively in industrial and commercial applications from the 1940s onward: non-stick coatings, stain-resistant fabrics, food packaging, and — most significantly for water contamination — firefighting foam (AFFF) used at military installations, airports, and industrial fire training sites. Florida has numerous military facilities, several large airports, and decades of industrial activity that created PFAS hotspots in groundwater across the state.
Marion County and the Ocala area don't have the prominent military installation PFAS plumes associated with cities like Pensacola or Jacksonville, but the county has a substantial agricultural sector, several industrial operations, and significant historical land use that may have introduced PFAS to the local environment.
The EPA's 2024 ruling establishing maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for six PFAS compounds — PFOA and PFOS at 4 parts per trillion (ppt), among others — has made PFAS testing mandatory for public water systems. The City of Ocala Utility Department, which draws from the Floridan Aquifer, is now required to test and report PFAS levels under these new standards.
The Floridan Aquifer Context
Ocala's municipal water supply draws from the Upper Floridan Aquifer — a deep, confined limestone aquifer that has historically been considered one of the cleaner groundwater sources in Florida. The aquifer's depth and confinement provide some natural protection from surface contamination, unlike the more vulnerable Biscayne Aquifer in South Florida.
However, "more protected" doesn't mean "immune." PFAS compounds are mobile in groundwater, particularly PFOA and PFOS, and can migrate through the aquifer over time. Where PFAS have entered the Floridan Aquifer system — through wastewater recharge, deep injection wells, or aquifer interconnections — they can persist indefinitely.
Marion County also relies significantly on private wells, particularly in rural and suburban areas outside Ocala's utility service territory. Private well owners in these areas should test specifically for PFAS — it requires a specialized laboratory test (EPA Method 537.1 or 533) that isn't included in standard well water test panels.
PFAS and Agricultural Applications
An often-overlooked PFAS pathway in agricultural regions like Marion County is biosolid application. Municipal sewage sludge (biosolids) has historically been applied to agricultural fields as fertilizer. When biosolids are contaminated with PFAS — which many are, because PFAS compounds from consumer products and industrial discharges pass through wastewater treatment plants without being destroyed — they deposit PFAS onto fields where it can leach into shallow groundwater.
Florida has significant biosolid application activity, and Marion County's agricultural land has been a recipient over the years. This is a potential PFAS pathway that's distinct from the military-base contamination stories that dominate PFAS headlines, and it's one that rural and agricultural-area well owners should take seriously.
What the New EPA Standards Mean for You
The EPA's new PFAS MCLs represent a regulatory sea change. Previously, there were no federal drinking water standards for PFAS, and many utilities didn't test. Now, public water systems must test and report, and systems above the MCLs must take action to reduce PFAS. This process will play out over the next several years as utilities evaluate their water and, if needed, install treatment.
For Ocala city water customers, reviewing ECUA's annual Consumer Confidence Report (available from the City of Ocala Utility Department) will provide the most current PFAS data for your supply. Ask specifically about the EPA Method 537.1 results.
For private well owners, no agency will test your water for you — that's your responsibility. An accredited laboratory test for PFAS is the starting point. If PFAS are detected at concerning levels, a reverse osmosis system at the point of use (kitchen sink) is the most reliable residential treatment for PFAS reduction.
RO: The Gold Standard for PFAS Removal
Reverse osmosis membranes reject PFAS compounds at rates typically exceeding 95%. An NSF/ANSI 58-certified RO system under the kitchen sink provides reliable protection for drinking and cooking water regardless of what the utility or aquifer is doing.
Pitcher filters and standard carbon block filters provide partial PFAS reduction but are not as reliable or complete as RO. If PFAS is a primary concern, RO is the appropriate technology.
