Is Ocala Tap Water Safe? What City of Ocala Utilities Customers Should Know

Ocala's municipal water comes from the same geological formation that makes Marion County famous among spring lovers: the Upper Floridan Aquifer. The City of Ocala Utilities operates a network of production wells drawing from this aquifer, treating the water before distributing it to customers throughout the city.

By EPA regulatory standards, Ocala tap water is safe. The utility monitors for over 80 regulated contaminants, publishes annual Consumer Confidence Reports, and maintains compliance with primary drinking water standards. You're not at risk from drinking Ocala tap water as delivered by the utility.

The more nuanced story involves what's actually in the water, how it affects your home, and where additional filtration provides genuine benefits.

The Hardness Problem — Severe by Any Standard

Even after treatment at City of Ocala's water plant, municipal water arrives at homes with hardness levels in the 14-25 GPG range — the Water Quality Association's "very hard" to "extremely hard" classification. Disinfection Byproducts
