Well Water Treatment in Ocala, FL — Marion County's High-Mineral Aquifer

Marion County is spring country. Silver Springs, Rainbow Springs, and dozens of smaller springs emerge from the Floridan Aquifer here, drawing visitors from around the world. What makes those springs spectacular — the enormous carbonate mineral load dissolved from billions of years of limestone geology — also makes Ocala well water one of the most challenging to treat in all of Florida.

If you're on a private well in Ocala or the surrounding Marion County area, you're drawing from an aquifer that produces water with some of the highest mineral concentrations in the state.

Marion County Well Water: What You're Working With

Extreme hardness: Ocala-area well water routinely tests at 18-30+ GPG — among the highest anywhere in the continental United States. At these levels, scale deposits form aggressively. A water heater without softened supply water here may show significant scale accumulation within 12-18 months of installation. Dishwashers, washing machines, and tankless heaters face similar accelerated wear.

Hydrogen sulfide: Many Marion County wells produce water with a noticeable to strong rotten egg odor from dissolved hydrogen sulfide gas. H2S is produced by sulfate-reducing bacteria in the aquifer and by the natural reduction of sulfate minerals in limestone. Concentrations vary by well depth and location. H2S also accelerates corrosion in copper plumbing and attacks rubber seals in appliances.

Radionuclides: This surprises many Marion County homeowners. The Floridan Aquifer contains naturally occurring radioactive materials — particularly radium-226, radium-228, and radon — leached from uranium-bearing phosphatic limestone formations. Radium levels in untreated Floridan Aquifer wells in Marion County can exceed EPA's 5 pCi/L MCL. Radon volatilizes from water — meaning it enters the air when you shower or run the tap.

Iron and manganese: Typical concentrations run 0.5-3 mg/L for iron and 0.05-0.5 mg/L for manganese. Both cause staining (iron makes orange stains, manganese makes black stains) and both must be removed before water contacts the softener resin, which they can foul and deactivate.

Treatment System Design for Marion County Wells

Stage 1 — Aeration/oxidation: Dissolved oxygen introduced into the water stream converts dissolved iron to filterable form and begins volatilizing hydrogen sulfide. A retention tank allows oxidation to complete before filtration. Some systems use hydrogen peroxide injection for wells with very high sulfide concentrations.

Stage 2 — Iron/manganese filtration: A backwashing greensand or catalytic media filter removes oxidized iron and manganese particles. Iron levels above 3 mg/L typically require potassium permanganate regeneration for reliable removal.

Stage 3 — High-capacity water softener: At Ocala's extreme hardness levels, sizing matters enormously. A 40,000-grain softener appropriate for Tampa at 12 GPG is severely inadequate for an Ocala home at 25 GPG. Properly sized systems for this area may require 64,000-96,000 grain capacity. Ion exchange softening also provides partial radium removal (radium behaves similarly to calcium in ion exchange).

Stage 4 — UV disinfection: A UV system installed after softening kills bacteria and viruses without adding chemicals. Marion County's rural areas have significant agricultural activity, and shallow wells near horse farms and cattle operations carry bacterial risk.

Stage 5 — Reverse osmosis for drinking water: An RO system at the kitchen sink addresses radionuclides (including any radium breakthrough from the softener), nitrates, and trace contaminants not captured upstream. RO provides the final polish for drinking and cooking water.
