Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a family of synthetic chemicals that have become one of the defining water quality concerns of the 21st century. The Brevard County PFAS Context

Both facilities have decades of operational history involving aviation, rocketry, and emergency response activities that used AFFF. PFAS contamination has been documented in groundwater near Patrick SFB, and the Space Coast's aerospace industrial corridor has additional historical PFAS use from manufacturing processes.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) has conducted investigations and monitoring around Patrick SFB. The documented plume patterns and affected groundwater areas are the most significant PFAS concern for Palm Bay and the surrounding south Brevard County area.

The health concern driving PFAS regulatory action is most acute for children and infants. PFAS have been detected in breast milk and in umbilical cord blood, indicating prenatal exposure. Infants who consume formula mixed with PFAS-contaminated tap water receive relatively high PFAS doses per body weight compared to adults. The developing immune system, thyroid, and reproductive systems of young children appear more vulnerable to PFAS disruption than adult physiology.

For Palm Bay families with young children — particularly those on private wells near military or industrial facilities — testing and treating drinking water for PFAS is a high-priority action.
