But for families with infants, pregnant members, or health sensitivities, the community's agricultural watershed, Peace River source complexity, and chloramine disinfection chemistry create a picture worth examining in detail.

Manatee County Utilities (MCU) serves Palmetto with water from the Floridan Aquifer and the Peace River Manasota Regional Water Supply Authority (PRMRWSA). The Peace River drains through central Florida's phosphate mining corridor in Polk and Hardee counties, carrying elevated naturally occurring radionuclides (radium-226, radium-228), trace heavy metals, and agricultural runoff. MCU treats this source water thoroughly, but the input complexity is higher than utilities drawing from less industrially influenced sources.

Groups With Heightened Concern
Infants under 6 months: Nitrate risk in an agricultural watershed is a genuine concern for formula preparation. Boiling concentrates nitrates rather than removing them. Use NSF 58-certified RO water for infant formula. Chloramine byproducts and trace PFAS are additional concerns.
Pregnant women: HAA5 associations with adverse birth outcomes, nitrate associations with fetal oxygen delivery, and PFAS crossing the placental barrier all support consistent filtered water during pregnancy.
Dialysis patients: Chloramine is toxic at dialysis concentrations. Confirm chloramine pre-treatment requirements with your healthcare provider before using home dialysis equipment.
What to Do
For the most comprehensive protection: install an NSF 58-certified under-sink RO system. A 4–5 stage system addresses the full spectrum: chloramine byproducts, nitrates, PFAS, radionuclides, lead, and dissolved minerals. Filter every 6–12 months, membrane every 4–5 years. Add a whole-house softener upstream for scale protection and extended RO membrane life at Palmetto's hardness levels.
