PFAS Forever Chemicals in Sarasota, FL Drinking Water

Sarasota's identity is built around its natural environment — the Gulf beaches, the barrier islands, the mangrove estuaries. But the water coming out of Sarasota's taps carries chemical signatures that have nothing to do with this natural character. PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are present in Florida's water environment, and Sarasota County residents are right to ask what this means for their drinking water.
Where Sarasota Gets Its Water
The City of Sarasota Utilities and Sarasota County Public Utilities serve most residents through different service areas, both drawing primarily from the Floridan Aquifer. This deep limestone aquifer delivers water that is naturally high in minerals — Sarasota water hardness typically runs 14 to 20 GPG — and that is disinfected with chloramines upon treatment.
The Floridan Aquifer is a deep, confined formation that has historically been protected from surface contamination by the overlying clay layers. However, PFAS compounds — which are extraordinarily mobile in the environment and resistant to degradation — have been detected in Florida groundwater at increasing rates as monitoring improves. Sarasota's proximity to Venice Municipal Airport, various industrial areas, and the broader network of military training sites along Florida's west coast creates potential PFAS exposure pathways through both atmospheric deposition and regional groundwater connectivity.
Florida's PFAS Landscape and Sarasota's Position
Florida has more PFAS contamination sites than almost any other state, driven by the military's heavy use of AFFF firefighting foam at bases across the state. While Sarasota doesn't have a major military installation, the regional aquifer connects hydraulically over long distances, and atmospheric PFAS deposition is a statewide phenomenon.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and EPA have been expanding PFAS monitoring across the state. The EPA's 2024 final rule established maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for PFOA and PFOS at 4 parts per trillion — an extraordinarily low limit reflecting the compounds' bioaccumulation and long-term health effects. Utilities have until 2029 to comply, meaning current water may still contain levels above the new limits even while remaining technically compliant under transitional rules.
The Health Stakes
PFAS compounds accumulate in the human body over time. Unlike many environmental contaminants that the body metabolizes and excretes, PFAS have half-lives measured in years — meaning the body's burden increases with continued exposure. The most studied compounds, PFOA and PFOS, are associated with:
- Kidney cancer and testicular cancer
- Thyroid disruption and hypothyroidism
- Immune system suppression (reduced antibody response to vaccines)
- Elevated cholesterol
- Preeclampsia and pregnancy hypertension
- Developmental delays in children with in-utero exposure

- High-quality activated carbon block: 50–90% removal depending on compound and filter age
- Standard pitcher filters (Brita-style): Minimal to no PFAS removal
- Conventional treatment (boiling, etc.): No PFAS removal; boiling concentrates PFAS
Sarasota-Specific Considerations: Hard Water and RO
Sarasota's 14–20 GPG hardness creates an important pre-treatment consideration for RO systems. Hard water accelerates mineral fouling of RO membranes. For best results and longest membrane life in Sarasota:
