PFAS Forever Chemicals in Tampa, FL Water — What You Need to Know

PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — have become one of the most pressing water quality concerns in the United States over the past decade. These synthetic chemicals, used since the 1940s in firefighting foams, nonstick cookware, water-resistant fabrics, and countless industrial applications, don't break down in the environment or in the human body. That's why they're called "forever chemicals" — and why they've now been detected in water systems across Florida, including the Tampa Bay region.
PFAS in the Tampa Bay Region
Tampa's drinking water comes from Tampa Bay Water, the regional authority that blends surface water from the Alafia River, Hillsborough River, and Tampa Bypass Canal with desalinated water from the Apollo Beach facility. The source waters have shown PFAS detections in state and federal monitoring, driven primarily by two factors:
Military and airport operations: Aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), a firefighting agent heavily laden with PFAS compounds, was used for decades at MacDill Air Force Base in south Tampa and at Tampa International Airport. AFFF is the primary source of PFAS groundwater contamination in Florida. The Floridan Aquifer and surface water systems near these facilities have shown elevated PFAS levels in monitoring data.
Industrial and commercial sources: Tampa's industrial heritage — particularly around Port Tampa Bay and Hillsborough Bay — has contributed PFAS loading from manufacturing, firefighting training, and disposal of PFAS-containing products. Urban stormwater runoff carries PFAS from consumer products, treated fabrics, and countless other sources into surface water systems.
The EPA finalized its first-ever federal limits for PFAS in drinking water in 2024, setting maximum contaminant levels for PFOA and PFOS at 4 parts per trillion (ppt) — a vanishingly small number that reflects how seriously regulators now view these compounds. Tampa Bay Water and the City of Tampa are actively monitoring and working to comply with these new standards, but the path to full compliance involves significant infrastructure investment.
What We Know About PFAS Health Effects
The scientific literature on PFAS health effects has grown substantially in recent years. The most well-studied compounds — PFOA and PFOS — have been linked to:
- Increased risk of kidney and testicular cancer
- Thyroid disease and disrupted hormone function
- Elevated cholesterol levels
- Immune system suppression (including reduced vaccine response in children)
- Developmental effects in infants and children, including low birth weight
- High blood pressure during pregnancy (preeclampsia)
These effects are associated with long-term, cumulative exposure — not a single glass of water. But given that Tampa residents drink this water daily for years or decades, reducing ongoing PFAS exposure is genuinely meaningful for long-term health.
How PFAS Gets Into Tampa's Water Supply
PFAS compounds move through the environment via several pathways:

- Atmospheric deposition: PFAS compounds are volatile enough to travel through the air and deposit on water surfaces — a diffuse but real contamination pathway.
What Removes PFAS from Drinking Water?
Not all water treatment technologies remove PFAS effectively. Conventional water treatment — coagulation, sedimentation, sand filtration, and chlorine/chloramine disinfection — doesn't remove PFAS at all. The technologies that work are:
Reverse Osmosis (RO): The gold standard for residential PFAS removal. RO membranes physically reject PFAS molecules (which are relatively large and negatively charged) at 90–99% efficiency for most common compounds, including PFOA, PFOS, and newer replacement compounds like GenX. This is the most effective and practical home solution.
Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) or Carbon Block: Activated carbon adsorbs PFAS compounds onto its surface. High-quality carbon block filters can achieve meaningful PFAS reduction but with important limitations: they're more effective for some PFAS compounds than others, and their capacity for PFAS adsorption is finite — they become saturated and can actually release PFAS if not changed on schedule.
Anion Exchange Resin: Specialized ion exchange media designed for PFAS removal can achieve very high removal rates but are primarily used in municipal-scale systems rather than under-sink residential applications.
For Tampa households, an under-sink RO system provides the most reliable and comprehensive PFAS protection available at the residential scale — and simultaneously addresses the chloramine byproducts, lead, and minerals that also characterize the city's water supply.
Should You Test for PFAS?
Tampa Bay Water's annual Consumer Confidence Reports provide utility-level PFAS data, but this reflects the utility's effluent, not necessarily what comes out of your specific tap. Private PFAS testing (available through certified labs in Florida) can confirm your household's exposure, particularly if you're near MacDill or the airport. Results are typically reported within 2–3 weeks.
Whether or not you test first, the EPA's new 4 ppt limits reflect the scientific consensus that no level of PFAS exposure should be considered safe. For most Tampa households, the precautionary case for RO filtration is already compelling without a lab report in hand.
