Chloramine Contamination in Pinellas Park Water — What Homeowners Need to Know

These include haloacetonitriles and halonitromethanes — compounds that laboratory studies have found more cytotoxic than regulated THMs. They're not currently required to be reported in utilities' CCRs.
Chloramines are also harder to remove than chlorine. Standard activated carbon filters — pitcher filters, refrigerator filters, basic inline cartridges — work well for chlorine but poorly for chloramines. The surface chemistry of standard carbon isn't optimized for breaking down chloramine bonds, and the contact time in typical cartridges isn't sufficient for meaningful reduction.
