How Plant City Water Gets Disinfected

Hillsborough County Public Utilities (HCPU) serves the vast majority of Plant City's residential and commercial properties. Like most large Florida utilities, HCPU uses chloramines — a combination of chlorine and ammonia — as its residual disinfectant. The switch from free chlorine to chloramines was driven by EPA regulations limiting trihalomethane (THM) formation: chlorine alone reacts with naturally occurring organic matter in Florida's limestone-filtered groundwater to produce more THMs than chloramines do at the treatment plant.

Rubber and gasket degradation: Chloramines are more chemically aggressive toward elastomers than free chlorine.
