Chloramine Contaminants in Pompano Beach, FL: What Broward County Water Users Should Know

Pompano Beach's water supply is managed by Broward County Water and Wastewater Services, which draws from the Biscayne Aquifer — the shallow, highly productive limestone aquifer underlying southeastern Florida. After treatment, the water is disinfected with chloramines before distribution. The Biscayne Aquifer and Chloramine Treatment
Broward County's raw water from the Biscayne Aquifer is relatively high in natural organic matter — dissolved organic carbon from decaying plant material that percolates through the shallow sandy soils of South Florida. When this organic matter reacts with chlorine, it forms regulated disinfection byproducts: specifically trihalomethanes (TTHMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs).
To limit TTHM and HAA formation, Broward County uses chloramines as the residual disinfectant rather than free chlorine. Chloramines produce lower concentrations of TTHMs and HAAs — but they create a different set of byproducts and present different household chemistry challenges.
What Chloramines Do Differently
Chloramines are more chemically stable than free chlorine. They travel further through the distribution network without losing disinfecting strength, which is why large utilities prefer them — the water arriving at a customer's tap 20 miles from the treatment plant still has measurable chloramine residual. But this stability creates challenges at home:
They don't evaporate from water at room temperature. Free chlorine dissipates relatively quickly if you leave tap water in an open container for an hour or let it sit overnight. Chloramines do not — they remain bound to the water for days. This means you can't simply leave a pitcher of water on the counter to "off-gas" the taste.
Standard activated carbon removes them more slowly. Brita and other standard pitcher filters remove free chlorine very effectively because free chlorine is highly reactive with carbon. Chloramine removal requires more contact time and ideally catalytic carbon media. They form nitrogen-based disinfection byproducts.
