PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, often called "forever chemicals" — have become Florida's most significant emerging water quality concern. For Pompano Beach and Broward County residents, the PFAS picture involves the Biscayne Aquifer's particular vulnerability to surface contamination, multiple historically significant PFAS sources in the regional area, and a water utility now subject to the EPA's new stringent PFAS drinking water standards.

Why the Biscayne Aquifer Is Particularly Vulnerable to PFAS

The Biscayne Aquifer — the sole source of drinking water for most of Broward and Miami-Dade counties — sits just 10 to 75 feet below the surface and is essentially unconfined: rainwater and surface water can reach it relatively quickly, bringing whatever contaminants are present at the surface. This is a fundamentally different vulnerability profile than the deep Floridan Aquifer that serves North and Central Florida, which is protected by hundreds of feet of confining rock layers.

PFAS's combination of extreme mobility in groundwater, persistence (they don't degrade), and the aquifer's shallow, unconfined character creates a straightforward contamination pathway. Once PFAS enter the Biscayne Aquifer from any surface source — airport operations, firefighting training, industrial discharge, biosolid application — they travel with the groundwater and can show up in utility production wells.

PFAS Sources in the Broward County Region

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport: Just south of Pompano Beach, FLL has decades of AFFF use history for aircraft emergencies and fire training. Airport-associated PFAS contamination of nearby groundwater has been documented at airports across Florida and the U.S. FLL's proximity to Broward County's water production wellfields makes this a relevant concern.

Systems exceeding the new MCLs — PFOA and PFOS at 4 ppt, other PFAS at 10 ppt — must take action to reduce concentrations within five years of the rule's compliance deadline.

Broward County's Consumer Confidence Report (Water Quality Report), available on the county's water utility website, will include PFAS test results as monitoring requirements take effect. Pompano Beach residents can request the most current testing data from the utility directly and review the annual report online.

Even utilities that currently meet the new MCLs may face challenges as testing methodology improves — the EPA's new rules require more sensitive analytical methods than previously used, potentially detecting PFAS at levels that older methods couldn't.

Private Well Owners in Broward County

While Pompano Beach is predominantly served by municipal water, some residential and agricultural properties in western Broward County maintain private wells. For these well owners, PFAS testing is a self-directed responsibility — no government agency monitors private wells for PFAS. A specialized PFAS panel from an NELAP-certified Florida laboratory is the appropriate first step.

Well owners in western Broward County agricultural areas should also consider PFAS from biosolid application — a PFAS source that's distinct from military or airport contamination and is less commonly discussed but potentially significant in agricultural zones.

Treatment: Reverse Osmosis for PFAS

The most effective residential treatment for PFAS in drinking water is a reverse osmosis system. NSF/ANSI 58-certified RO systems remove PFAS compounds at rates typically exceeding 95%, providing reliable, verifiable protection independent of utility performance.

For Pompano Beach municipal water customers who want PFAS protection without waiting for utility results or regulatory action, an under-sink RO system under the kitchen sink is the straightforward solution. It addresses PFAS simultaneously with chloramines, hardness minerals, disinfection byproducts, and other dissolved contaminants in Broward County's water.

Granular activated carbon (GAC) filters, including pitcher filters, provide partial PFAS reduction but are less reliable and complete than RO for PFAS removal. If PFAS is a specific concern, RO is the appropriate technology.

The regulatory process for PFAS in drinking water will continue to evolve over the next several years — more compounds will likely be regulated, MCLs may be revised, and utility monitoring and treatment will continue to improve.
