PFAS Forever Chemicals in Punta Gorda: Charlotte County's Water Contamination Reality

Punta Gorda has one of Florida's most distinctive natural settings — Charlotte Harbor, the Peace River, and the surrounding watershed that drains more than half of the Florida peninsula. That watershed also carries the legacy of over a century of phosphate mining, agricultural activity, and industrial development that has introduced complex chemistry into the regional water system. For PFAS specifically, the Peace River watershed represents one of Southwest Florida's more significant exposure pathways — and Punta Gorda homeowners have practical reasons to understand it.
The Peace River Watershed and PFAS
PFAS contamination in Florida doesn't come from a single source — it's a diffuse contamination problem with multiple contributors:
Phosphate industry legacy: The phosphate belt extending through Polk, Hardee, and DeSoto counties — all in the Peace River watershed — has historically used PFAS-containing process chemicals and fluorine compounds in phosphate ore processing. Some of these compounds have reached groundwater and the river system over decades of industrial activity.
Military flight training activities: Southwest Florida has hosted military aviation training operations at various facilities over the decades. PFAS-containing AFFF firefighting foam was used at these facilities through at least 2018 when the military began transitioning away from PFAS-based AFFF. Biosolids land application: PFAS-containing treated sewage sludge (biosolids) was applied as fertilizer to agricultural land throughout the Peace River watershed for decades. Stormwater runoff: PFAS from consumer products — water-repellent textiles, food packaging, cleaning products — reach surface water through stormwater runoff from Punta Gorda's developed areas and across the broader watershed.
Charlotte County Utilities and PFAS Monitoring
Charlotte County Utilities is required to monitor for PFAS under the EPA's Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 5), which required sampling between 2023 and 2025. Results are published in the annual Consumer Confidence Report available through the utility. The EPA's April 2024 final rule establishing maximum contaminant levels for PFAS — PFOA and PFOS at 4 parts per trillion — means utilities must achieve compliance by 2027 and install required treatment by 2029.
This timeline means there is a multi-year window during which Charlotte County water may contain PFAS above the new MCLs without yet being in violation. The gap between "legally compliant under current rules" and "below the new MCLs" is where consumer-level filtration has its clearest justification.
Health Context for Punta Gorda Residents
The health effects of PFAS exposure are an active research area. Long-term, higher-level exposures (particularly in communities near major industrial PFAS sources) have been associated with kidney cancer, testicular cancer, thyroid disease, high cholesterol, and immune system disruption. For the lower concentrations typically found in municipal water, the evidence is less definitive but the regulatory direction is clearly toward treating these compounds more cautiously, not less. The EPA's decision to set MCLs at the lowest measurable level reflects scientific consensus that no safe threshold has been established.
For Punta Gorda households with children, pregnant women, or members with conditions affected by immune or endocrine disruption, the precautionary rationale for PFAS filtration is strong regardless of current compliance status.
What Removes PFAS: The Honest Assessment
Reverse Osmosis — the most effective option: An RO membrane removes 90–99% of PFAS compounds from drinking water, including both long-chain PFAS (PFOA, PFOS) and the short-chain variants that industry shifted to after the original compounds were regulated. For a Punta Gorda household, an under-sink five-stage RO system protecting drinking and cooking water is the most impactful and cost-effective PFAS reduction measure available at the consumer level.
Activated Carbon — partially effective: High-quality granular activated carbon removes longer-chain PFAS reasonably well but provides inconsistent protection against short-chain variants. Carbon is a useful first stage before RO but insufficient as standalone PFAS treatment.

A Practical Starting Point
Review Charlotte County's most recent Consumer Confidence Report for their PFAS monitoring results, then compare those results to the EPA's 4 ppt PFOA/PFOS MCL. If the utility's PFAS levels are below the new MCL, that's useful context — though not a reason to dismiss filtration if you have vulnerable household members. If they're above, a reverse osmosis system is the clear immediate action. Either way, an under-sink RO system is the most cost-effective comprehensive water quality improvement for drinking water in Punta Gorda.
