Largo is Pinellas County's third-largest city — a dense, built-out community where nearly every home has been on Pinellas County Utilities municipal water for decades. The county draws from Tampa Bay Water, the regional authority that blends water from the Alafia and Hillsborough Rivers, the Tampa Bypass Canal, and the region's desalination plant in Apollo Beach. This blended supply is extensively treated before it reaches Largo taps — but treatment creates its own set of byproducts that motivate many residents to add a final filtration layer at home.

What's in Largo Tap Water?

Pinellas County's water hardness runs from 8 to 14 GPG — moderate compared to the extreme hardness of inland Pasco or Polk County systems, but still enough to cause scale buildup on fixtures and showerheads over time. The bigger quality concerns for most Largo residents are in the treatment chemistry rather than the raw mineral content.

Chloramine disinfection is standard across the entire Tampa Bay Water regional distribution system. Chloramines are more stable than free chlorine across the long distribution distances Pinellas County requires, but they react with organic matter to form haloacetic acids (HAA5s) and other disinfection byproducts. Largo's Consumer Confidence Reports regularly show HAA5 levels that, while under the legal limit, trend higher than many homeowners are comfortable with for daily consumption.

Pinellas County's dense, older housing stock adds another dimension. Pre-1986 homes — and there are many in Largo, which developed heavily in the 1950s through 1980s — may have lead solder at pipe joints or lead-containing brass fittings. Largo itself has an ongoing pipe replacement program, but private plumbing inside homes is the homeowner's responsibility. The utility's tap compliance testing doesn't capture lead pickup inside your specific home's pipes.

Why Reverse Osmosis Is the Right Solution

Florida's heat and humidity don't meaningfully affect an RO system's performance — the system lives inside the cabinet, at ambient indoor temperatures. The main maintenance items are:

  • Sediment and carbon pre-filters: Replace every 6–12 months depending on usage
  • RO membrane: Replace every 3–5 years; some Largo systems can go longer with lower TDS source water
  • Post-carbon polish filter: Replace annually or with each membrane change

A quality RO system sends its productive water to your tap and routes reject water (concentrated minerals) to the drain. Modern high-efficiency membranes have improved significantly — some models now produce a 1:1 ratio of filtered water to reject water, compared to older systems that wasted 3–4 gallons per gallon filtered.

Pinellas County does a competent job treating regional water to compliance. But for drinking and cooking water specifically, the chloramine chemistry, aging distribution infrastructure, and the realistic possibility of lead pickup in older homes creates a strong case for point-of-use RO.
