Tarpon Springs Water Supply

Tarpon Springs receives water through Pinellas County Utilities, which purchases treated water from Tampa Bay Water. The regional system blends surface water from multiple river intakes with output from the Apollo Beach desalination plant — giving it a somewhat different character than inland counties drawing purely from the Floridan Aquifer.

Pinellas County's finished water hardness typically ranges from 8 to 14 GPG — moderately hard, less extreme than inland Pasco or Polk County systems, but enough to cause the characteristic scale buildup that Tarpon Springs residents recognize on their shower doors and faucets. At the northern end of the county, Tarpon Springs's water sometimes trends toward the upper end of this range.

The water is disinfected with chloramines throughout the Tampa Bay Water system, creating the familiar slight chemical note in tap water and producing disinfection byproducts that accumulate in the distribution system.

Why Tarpon Springs Homes Still Benefit from Softening

Running a dishwasher with softened water produces dramatically cleaner, spot-free results.

Water heater and appliance efficiency: Even at 10 GPG, scale accumulates meaningfully on water heater elements and in tank bottoms over years. Florida homes run water heaters continuously — the year-round warmth means constant standby heating and no seasonal breaks that might reduce scale accumulation. A 10-year-old water heater in a Florida hard water home carries significant internal scale regardless of maintenance.

Greek Heritage Homes and Water Quality
