Under the EPA's 2024 PFAS National Primary Drinking Water Rule — which set MCLs for PFOA and PFOS at 4 parts per trillion — Martin County Utilities is required to test and report PFAS concentrations in its annual Consumer Confidence Report.

Request your most recent CCR from Martin County Utilities and review it carefully when PFAS data becomes available. Under the new rules, utilities that detect PFAS above the MCL have until 2029 to achieve compliance through treatment — meaning residents could be exposed to non-compliant PFAS levels for up to five years while utilities build treatment capacity. Household-level protection is the most immediate option for families who want protection now.

Private well owners in Stuart and western Martin County are entirely outside the utility testing framework. PFAS in private wells requires independent testing — a comprehensive PFAS panel through a Florida-certified laboratory. Given the contamination sources present in Martin County, private well testing for PFAS is prudent, particularly for wells in agricultural areas or near Witham Field.

Health Risks of PFAS Exposure

The EPA's 4 ppt MCL for PFOA and PFOS reflects scientific consensus that these chemicals pose health risks at very low concentrations.
