PFAS Forever Chemicals in Tallahassee Water: What Leon County Residents Should Know

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — PFAS — have become one of the most scrutinized water quality issues in the United States. These synthetic compounds, used for decades in firefighting foam, food packaging, stain-resistant textiles, and industrial processes, persist indefinitely in the environment and accumulate in human tissue. Florida, with its porous geology and high concentration of military installations, has some of the most significant PFAS contamination documentation in the country.

Why Tallahassee Faces Specific PFAS Risk
Tallahassee International Airport: Commercial and general aviation airports conduct aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) training, historically using AFFF containing PFOS and PFOA. North Florida military legacy: Tyndall Air Force Base, Eglin Air Force Base, and other Panhandle military installations have extensive documented PFAS contamination that is part of the broader North Florida PFAS groundwater picture. The regional PFAS plumes from military installations across the Panhandle have elevated awareness of PFAS in the Floridan Aquifer throughout the region.
Biosolids application: Historical land application of wastewater biosolids — which can contain concentrated PFAS from household products and industrial discharges — represents a diffuse contamination source. Leon County and surrounding areas have extensive agricultural land where biosolids were applied under older regulatory frameworks that did not require PFAS screening.
Regulatory Status and Tallahassee Utilities' Response
The EPA's April 2024 PFAS MCLs set enforceable limits for six PFAS compounds — PFOA and PFOS at 4 parts per trillion. The City of Tallahassee Utilities must monitor for these compounds and take action if levels exceed the MCLs.
Tallahassee's blended supply treatment infrastructure includes activated carbon systems (for taste and odor control) that provide some PFAS adsorption capacity. Private Wells in Leon County: The Critical Gap
The most significant PFAS risk for Tallahassee-area residents is in the substantial private well population across Leon County. Unlike municipal water systems, private wells have no PFAS regulatory oversight. Testing is voluntary, and the majority of private well owners in Florida have never tested for PFAS.
FDEP's monitoring data shows PFAS detections throughout the Floridan Aquifer in North Florida at concentrations that in some areas exceed the new EPA MCLs. Leon County's mix of urban, suburban, and rural properties — many with decades-old wells — represents a population with genuinely uncertain PFAS exposure status.

PFAS Treatment That Works

Granular activated carbon (GAC): Effective for long-chain PFAS when designed with adequate contact time and regularly replaced media. Less effective for short-chain PFAS substitutes like GenX. Whole-house GAC can reduce PFAS throughout the home, complementing a point-of-use RO for drinking water.
PFAS-selective ion exchange resin: Newer anion exchange resins show excellent removal of both long- and short-chain PFAS, including compounds that GAC struggles with. Increasingly available in whole-house configurations and representing an emerging best practice.
Water softeners do NOT remove PFAS. Softeners remove hardness minerals only. PFAS passes through a standard ion exchange softener completely unaffected.
