If you own a Berkey® gravity water filter, you've probably discovered the hard way that replacement elements are extremely difficult to find. Since late 2022, the U.S. EPA has issued stop-sale orders covering Black Berkey® purification elements, and the resulting litigation was still unresolved as of 2026. The practical result for owners: the manufacturer has been unable to produce the elements, official channels ran dry, and remaining stock on resale sites often sells at inflated prices — with no way to verify it's genuine or fresh.
The good news: you don't have to throw away your stainless-steel housing. The two-piece upper/lower chamber design used by Berkey® systems is a standard gravity-filter format, and reputable manufacturers now make elements designed to fit it.

A note for Florida households
