The deciding factor: filter supply
A gravity system is only as good as the elements inside it — they need replacing every 6–12 months. EPA stop-sale orders issued in late 2022 have prevented manufacture of Black Berkey® elements, and the litigation remained unresolved into 2026. However the case ends, a filter you can't reliably re-buy is a dead end for a system you'll own for a decade.
The King Tank (with stand) and King Tank (without stand) use black elements that are in active production, independently tested, and — because they're BB9-2 style — also fit older Berkey® housings if you're keeping yours.
Performance
Both designs rely on gravity-fed activated carbon: excellent for chlorine, taste, odor and many organic contaminants; not a solution for dissolved solids, sodium or heavy mineral loads.
